IWH forecasts of economic activity
The IWH generates regularly forecasts of economic activity in the world, in
the euro area and in Germany for the current and next year. It also produces
a separate annual forecast for the east German economy on the basis of sectoral
developments in production and selected components of demand. For this purpose
it conducts regular surveys of companies to collect data of economic activity.

"Konjunktur aktuell: Die Erholung legt nur eine kurze Pause ein"
Die weltwirtschaftliche Erholung wird sich im Jahr 2010 weiter fortsetzen. Besonders hoch ist die Dynamik in den asiatischen Volkswirtschaften. Auch in den USA erholt sich die wirtschaftliche Aktivität trotz weiterhin bremsender Einflüsse aus dem Immobiliensektor und vom Arbeitsmarkt so weit, dass das Bruttoinlandsprodukt in diesem Jahr bereits wieder das Vorkrisenniveau erreichen wird. Im Euroraum verläuft die Erholung hingegen schleppend.

Barometer for economic activity in east Germany
The IWH has developed a quarterly output method for determining east Germany's
gross domestic product (excluding Berlin). The calculations are based on short-term
sectoral indicators of gross value added; they are published halfway through
the quarter and include a forecast of the next quarter. These data are aligned
with official annual data on gross domestic product and its value added components
in the first quarter after the year under review.

Company surveys
Since 1993 the IWH has conducted regular surveys among a fixed group of companies
in the manufacturing and construction industry to collect individual data on
economic activity. The surveys are carried out on a monthly basis with the construction
and the manufacturing industry taking turns. They are based on a rotating panel
of about 400 companies in each industry. The response rate is approx. 75 percent.
The results are published regularly (every month) as reports with figures and
standard table in the IWH publication Economy in change.

"IWH-Bauumfrage im Juni 2010: Ostdeutsches Baugewerbe im Juni 2010: Sommerhoch"
Das Geschäftsklima im ostdeutschen Baugewerbe hat sich laut IWH-Umfrage unter mehr als 300 Unternehmen im Juni weiter aufgehellt. Gegenüber der vorangegangenen Befragung im April, die von der zügigen Abwicklung der im Winter zurückgestellten Bauprojekte geprägt war, hat sich insbesondere die Geschäftslage nochmals deutlich verbessert. Die Geschäftsaussichten bewerten die Unternehmen in etwa so gut wie im Frühjahr.

"IWH-Industrieumfrage im Juli 2010: Ostdeutsche Industrie holt nach dem Kriseneinbruch weiter auf"
Das Verarbeitende Gewerbe Ostdeutschlands befindet sich im Aufschwung, wenn auch etwas „abgebremst“. Das zeigen die Ergebnisse der IWH-Industrieumfrage vom Juli unter rund 300 Industrieunternehmen. Nach dem Stimmungsschub in der Umfrage vom Mai schätzen die Unternehmen ihre Geschäftslage geringfügig um zwei Punkte schlechter ein, die Geschäftsaussichten für die nächsten sechs Monate sehen sie hingegen deutlich um neun Punkte verbessert.

Leading indicator manufacturing sector east Germany
Since 2001 the IWH has published a quarterly indicator of short term growth
prospects for the manufacturing industry in East Germany in the magazine Wirtschaftswoche;
this indicator includes the current results of IWH surveys of the manufacturing
and construction industry as well as official data such as new orders and interest
rate spread.
Joint diagnosis by the six economic research institutes
The joint diagnosis is an instrument for evaluating the overall economic situation
and development in Germany, the euro area and the rest of the world. For this
purpose, forecasts of economic activity are generated for the global economy
and its major regions. Economic policy recommendations are derived from these
forecasts for the euro area and the German economy. The objective of the joint
diagnosis, which is commissioned by the Federal Finance Ministry, is to produce
a uniform evaluation by all participating institutes. The results are published

"Erholung setzt sich fort – Risiken bleiben groß: Gemeinschaftsdiagnose Frühjahr 2010"
Im Frühjahr 2010 schreitet die Erholung der Weltwirtschaft voran, die Finanz- und Wirtschaftskrise der Jahre 2008 und 2009 wird allmählich überwunden. Allerdings ist das Tempo der Expansion in den einzelnen Weltregionen sehr unterschiedlich. In einigen Schwellenländern, vor allem in Asien, ist es ausgesprochen hoch, und vereinzelt besteht sogar die Gefahr einer konjunkturellen Überhitzung. Dagegen ist in den Industrieländern die Auslastung der gesamtwirtschaftlichen Kapazitäten weiterhin gering.
