Secretariat for research network CompNet gets new home at IWH

The Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH) – Member of the Leibniz Association is pleased to announce that it will be hosting the Secretariat for the Competitiveness Research Network (CompNet), an international network of scholars and practitioners, who share interest for top-notch research and policy analysis on competitiveness and productivity.

CompNet main activities include: (i) the promotion of policy-oriented analyses and research on competitiveness and productivity also drawing on its datasets; (ii) the updating and further upgrading of its micro-based database, which is available for several European economies and has rather unique features in terms of coverage and cross-country comparability; as well as (iii) the management of its macro-level database, which includes both traditional indicators and around twenty novel indicators of competitiveness. .

“Productivity growth and factor reallocation remains at the core of IWH, and hosting the secretariat of CompNet is an ideal addition to the portfolio of activities of the institute. We will be investing substantial resources in making the network a continuing success. The CompNet secretariat further enhances IWH’s role as the resource center for all questions surrounding productivity, factor re-allocation, structural change and competitiveness.” says IWH President Reint E. Gropp. “I am extremely pleased that IWH agreed to host the Secretariat of the network. Its strong academic credentials will complement CompNet achievements so far and set the base for a stronger contributions of the Network to research and policy output in the areas of competence. I am looking forward to the collaboration”, Filippo di Mauro, Chairman of CompNet, adds.

CompNet was originally created in 2012 within the European System of Central Banks (ESCB). After several years of successful operations, including a substantial record of publications, CompNet is now evolving in a self-governed and financed network. Sponsors include the European Central Bank (ECB), the European Commission, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), as well as the Tinbergen Institute. The network remains open to new sponsorships as well as any other form of co-operation.

The network’s governance structure includes an Advisory Board of highly reputed scholars and senior policy makers, chaired by the ECB Vice President Vítor Constâncio, to provide guidance on the long-term research objectives. On the academic side, confirmed members include Marc Melitz (Harvard University), Chad Syverson (University of Chicago), Ufuk Akcigit (University of Chicago), Gianmarco Ottaviano (London School of Economics), Eric Bartelsman (Vrije University), and Carlo Altomonte (Bocconi University).

CompNet’s next Annual Conference on “Innovation, firm size, productivity and imbalances in the age of de-globalization” is scheduled to take place in Brussels on 29-30 June 2017.
