Personal details

Prof. Reint E. Gropp, PhD, joined the IWH (Halle Institute for Economic Research– Member of the Leibniz Association) as president in November 2014. He is also a professor of economics at the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg. He is associate fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) and serves as consultant for various central banks. Prof. Jörg Rocholl, PhD, is the president of ESMT Berlin. He is also vice-chair of the advisory board to the German Federal Ministry of Finance, vice-chair of the Verein für Socialpolitik (German Economic Association), research fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), and research member of the European Corporate Governance Institute (ECGI), among others.

Using their recent discussion paper as a basis, Profs. Gropp and Rocholl will look at the current state of banking in Europe and the effects of the coronavirus crisis. They will assess the cleansing effects of the recent banking crisis. In U.S. regions with higher levels of supervisory forbearance on distressed banks during the crisis, there was less restructuring in the real sector and the banking sector remained less healthy for several years after the crisis. Regions with less supervisory forbearance experienced higher productivity growth after the crisis with more firm entries, job creation, and employment, wages, patents, and output growth. Based upon this assessment, they will discuss various possible scenarios for banking and finance after the current coronavirus crisis.

The event is part of Berlin Science Week 2020.
