Supervision and Research

Research

A dissertation is, of course, first and foremost an individual endeavour which, in addition to the purely intellectual demands, also requires a good deal of entrepreneurial spirit and initiative. What is special about the IWH-DPE is that the institutional framework of the programme and the IWH allows us to bundle, catalyse and strengthen this individual energy of each individual.

In addition to excellent supervision, high-quality equipment and the opportunity to participate in conferences, the IWH offers doctoral students further valuable opportunities in the field of economics.

Firstly, the doctoral students are integrated into the Institute's staff. This enables them to take part in Institute events such as fly-ins or guest lectures. The international faculty is available to doctoral students for counselling so that they can benefit from a broad network and diverse perspectives.

Secondly, doctoral students have the opportunity to present their research at the institute. This usually takes place in so-called brown bag seminars. These seminars provide a platform to scrutinise, defend and enrich their own research approach by receiving valuable feedback from colleagues.

IWH is the right place for anyone who wants to take advantage of these networking opportunities and actively address their colleagues. The IWH has an open-door policy and flat hierarchies that promote exchange and collaboration. In this sense, supervising professors are companions who want to help all doctoral students achieve the goal of academic excellence.

Supervision

In the IWH doctoral programme, each student has a supervisor who provides support and advice in all phases of the doctorate. This supervision is often individualised, whereby the supervisors are (junior) professors who have extensive research and publication experience.

Thanks to the excellent staffing ratio at the IWH, supervisors are able to cater to the individual needs of doctoral students. This also includes the frequency and detail of consultations on research projects. Particularly at the beginning of the doctorate, it is advisable to maintain regular and active consultations in order to correctly narrow down and define the research topic.

The supervisors at the IWH are also available to answer doctoral students' questions about the examinations at the cooperating universities where the doctorates are ultimately awarded. Even after the examinations and the award of the doctorate, the supervisors remain an important source of support, for example with placement on the labour market, writing letters of recommendation and starting a career.

Supervisors

Each doctoral student is assigned two or more experienced supervisors who guide their research, of which at least one is a member of IWH scientific staff.
