Abstract
This paper examines how collective bargaining through unions and workplace co-determination through works councils shape labour market imperfections and how labourmarket imperfections matter for employer wage premia. Based on representative Germanplant data for the years 1999{2016, we document that labour market imperfections arethe norm rather than the exception. Wage mark-downs, that is wages below the marginalrevenue product of labour rooted in employers' monopsony power, are the most prevalentoutcome. We further nd that both types of organised labour are accompanied by asmaller prevalence and intensity of wage mark-downs whereas the opposite holds for wagemark-ups, that is wages above the marginal revenue product of labour rooted in workers'monopoly power. Finally, we document a close link between our production-based labourmarket imperfection measures and employer wage premia. The prevalence and intensityof wage mark-downs are associated with a smaller level and larger dispersion of premiawhereas wage mark-ups are only accompanied by a higher premium level.

Competition, Cost Structure, and Labour Leverage: Evidence from the U.S. Airline Industry

Abstract
I study the effect of increasing competition on financial performance through labour leverage. To capture competition, I exploit variation in product market contestability in the U.S. airline industry. First, I find that increasing competitive pressure leads to increasing labour leverage, proxied by labour share. This explains the decrease in operating profitability through labour rigidities. Second, by exploiting variation in human capital specificity, I show that contestability of product markets induces labour market contestability. Whereas affected firms might experience more stress through higher wages or loss of skilled human capital, more mobile employee groups benefit from competitions through higher labour shares.

The Creation and Evolution of Entrepreneurial Public Markets

Abstract
This paper explores the creation and evolution of new stock exchanges around the world geared toward entrepreneurial companies, known as second-tier exchanges. Using hand-collected novel data, we show the proliferation of these exchanges in many countries, their significant volume of Initial Public Offerings (IPOs), and lower listing requirements. Shareholder protection strongly predicted exchange success, even in countries with high levels of venture capital activity, patenting, and financial market development. Better shareholder protection allowed younger, less-profitable, but faster-growing, companies to raise more capital. These results highlight the importance of institutions in enabling the provision of entrepreneurial capital to young companies.

What Drives the Commodity-Sovereign-Risk-Dependence in Emerging Market Economies?

Abstract
Using daily data for 34 emerging markets in the period 1994-2016, we find robust evidence that higher export commodity prices are associated with higher sovereign bond returns (indicating lower sovereign risk). The economic effect is especially pronounced for heavy commodity exporters. Examining the drivers, we find, first, that commodity-dependence is higher for countries that export large volumes of volatile commodities and that the effect increases in times of recessions, high inflation, and expansionary U.S. monetary policy. Second, the importance of raw material prices for sovereign financing can likely be mitigated if a country improves institutions and tax systems, attracts FDI inflows, invests in manufacturing, machinery and infrastructure, builds up reserve assets and opens capital and trade accounts. Third, the concentration of commodities within a country’s portfolio, its government indebtedness or amount of received development assistance appear to be only of secondary importance for commodity-dependence.

Firm-level Employment, Labour Market Reforms, and Bank Distress

Abstract
We explore the interaction between labour market reforms and financial frictions. Our study combines a new cross-country reform database on labour market reforms with matched firm-bank data for nine euro area countries over the period 1999 to 2013. While we find that labour market reforms are overall effective in increasing employment, restricted access to bank credit can undo up to half of long-term employment gains at the firm-level. Entrepreneurs without sufficient access to credit cannot reap the full benefits of more flexible employment regulation.

Abstract
Arbeitsmarktinstitutionen sind arbeitsmarktpolitische Maßnahmen, die auf eine Verbesserung von Arbeitsmarktergebnissen (z. B. Beschäftigung und Löhne) abzielen. Da Arbeitsmärkte komplexen Anpassungsmechanismen unterliegen, sind diese Maßnahmen jedoch unter Umständen kontraproduktiv oder werden von Nebenwirkungen begleitet. Ziel dieser Dissertation ist es, die Beschäftigungseffekte von Mindestlöhnen und des Kündigungsschutzes zu analysieren. Das erste Kapitel führt den Leser in die Thematik Arbeitsmarktinstitutionen ein. Im zweiten Kapitel wird untersucht, wie die Einführung des Mindestlohns in Deutschland auf die Beschäftigung wirkt. Es wird gezeigt, dass geringfügige Beschäftigung abgenommen und sozialversicherungspflichtige Beschäftigung zugenommen hat. Das dritte Kapitel widmet sich derselben Maßnahme, jedoch mit einem anderen Schwerpunkt: Die Mindestlohneinführung erhöht die Arbeitsmarktmobilität aus Niedriglohnländern (der Tschechischen Republik und Polen) in Grenzregionen. Diese Zunahme ausländischer Arbeitskräfte hat keine negativen Effekte auf die deutsche Beschäftigung zur Folge. Im vierten Kapitel wird ein Problem existierender NK-SAM-Modelle adressiert, die das Modellieren von Kündigungsschutz erlauben. Eine hierfür vorgeschlagene Erweiterung verbessert die empirische Relevanz des Modells unter einer restriktiven Annahme.

Does Extended Unemployment Benefit Duration Ameliorate the Negative Employment Effects of Job Loss?

Abstract
We study the effect of job displacement due to bankruptcies on earnings and employment prospects of displaced workers and analyse whether extended potential unemployment benefit duration (PBD) ameliorates the negative consequences of job loss. Using German administrative linked employer-employee data, we find that job loss has long-lasting negative effects on earnings and employment. Displaced workers also more often end up in irregular employment relationships (part-time, marginal part-time employment, and temporary agency work) than their non-displaced counterparts. Applying a regression discontinuity approach that exploits a three months PBD extension at the age threshold of 50 we find hardly any effects of longer PBD on labour market outcomes of displaced workers.
