Abstract
We estimate the relationship between changes in the body mass index (bmi) and wages or satisfaction, respectively, in a panel of German employees. In contrast to previous findings, our dynamic models indicate an inverse u-shaped association between bmi and wages. As the implied maximum occurs in the ‘overweight’ category, the positive trend in weight may not yet constitute a major limitation to productivity. Further investigation points out a stronger association among young workers and workers with jobs that are less protected. Work satisfaction of young workers is associated with bmi beyond the effect of earnings.

Abstract
Wanderten in den vergangenen 25 Jahren zahlreiche Menschen aus Ostdeutschland ab, so ist dieser Trend per saldo jüngst zum Erliegen gekommen. Dies hat auch damit zu tun, dass sich die Arbeitsmarktperspektiven verbessert haben. Die durchschnittlichen Bruttomonatsverdienste der Vollzeitbeschäftigten liegen in Ostdeutschland jedoch erst bei etwa 70 Prozent der Verdienste im Westen. Die wirtschaftlichen Möglichkeiten der Menschen in Ostdeutschland liegen aber viel näher am westdeutschen Niveau. So betragen die verfügbaren Einkommen im Osten immerhin 84 Prozent in Relation zum Westen. Berücksichtigt man noch Unterschiede der Preisniveaus, so kommt man auf ein reales Konsumniveau im Osten, das bei etwa 90 Prozent des Westniveaus liegt. Nach dem amerikanischen Bürgerkrieg war die Lücke zwischen der Produktion je Einwohner in den Nord- und den Südstaaten etwa so groß wie vor 25 Jahren zwischen Ost- und Westdeutschland; in den USA hat es aber 100 Jahre gedauert, bis sich die Lücke bis auf 10 Prozent geschlossen hatte. Auch verglichen mit anderen Transformationsländern wie beispielsweise Tschechien oder Polen ist der Aufholprozess Ostdeutschland deutlich weiter.

Abstract
We analyze the impact of financial globalization on volatilities of hours worked and wages of high-skilled and low-skilled workers. Using cross-country, industry-level data for the years 1970–2004, we establish stylized facts that document how volatilities of hours worked and wages of workers with different skill levels have changed over time. We then document that the volatility of hours worked by low-skilled workers has increased the most in response to the increase in financial globalization. We develop a dynamic stochastic general equilibrium model of a small open economy that is consistent with the empirical results. The model predicts that greater financial globalization increases the volatility of hours worked, and this effect is strongest for low-skilled workers.

Among young male workers, work satisfaction is affected beyond the effect on earnings. Our finding of an implied optimum bmi in the overweight range could indicate that the recent rise in weight does not yet constitute a major limitation to productivity.

The Effect of Housework on Wages in Germany: No Impact at all

Abstract
This paper presents evidence on the impact of hours spent on housework activities on individuals’ wages for Germany using data from both the German Socio-Economic Panel and the German Time Use Survey. In contrast to most of the international literature, we find no negative effect of housework on wages. This holds for men and women, for married and single individuals, and for part-time and full-time workers both in West and East Germany. Our insights do not change when we distinguish different types of housework activities or address the endogeneity of housework in our wage regressions by using instrumental variables estimators.

Abstract
Die Reallöhne in Deutschland sind viele Jahre in Folge gesunken bzw. stagnierten. Dies wird häufig als Grund sowohl für die günstige Wettbewerbsposition im Exportbereich als auch für die Konsumzurückhaltung der privaten Haushalte angeführt. Der Beitrag beschreibt die Lohnentwicklung in Deutschland in den vergangenen Jahren. Dabei wird deutlich, dass sich in den letzten Jahren Niedrig- und Hochlohnbranchen herausgebildet haben. Diese Lohnspreizung wurde letztlich durch Marktmechanismen hervorgerufen. So erhöhten sich die Reallöhne in Branchen mit guter Nachfrage stärker als in Branchen in einem schwierigen Marktumfeld. Die Durchsetzbarkeit von höheren Preisen für die angebotenen Güter dürfte ebenso wie Knappheiten auf sektoralen Arbeitsmärkten bei der Lohnfindung eine Rolle spielen.

Abstract
During October 20th and 21st the 8th workshop on Labor Market Policy in Halle (Saale) took place. The major theme was related to changes in the quality of work. One reason for selecting this topic points out that there is a declining number of unemployed people in the German labor market for now a couple of months. This development is often interpreted as the result of a successful labor market policy. But focusing only on quantitative aspects of labor market developments ignores the important aspect of the quality of work.
Over the last years there was also a contemporary debate about changes in the working world. And within this discussion the focus was not only on aspects like income, certainty of employment, and career opportunities. In addition to these issues and with considerable emphasis on the new aspects, the discussion extended to topics such as sense and meaning of activities, work-life balances, self-realization, autonomy, and job satisfaction. It is the aim of the 8th workshop to present and to discuss the current state of the quality of work-debate in the labor market research to a broad audience of scientists as well as practical women and men, and to shed light on possible further research topics in this area. Besides of the opening lecture given by Dr. Ulrich Walwei (IAB), eleven additional papers have been presented during the two-day’s conference.

Ageing and Labour Markets: An Analysis on the effect of worker’s age on productivity, innovation and mobility

Abstract
The present study analyses the labour market effect of workers’ ageing. Explicitly, the impact of age on productivity and wages, on innovation as well as on mobility is explored empirically. The econometric analyses are based on firm and employment data from the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) and, thus, refer to the labour market of Germany. Regarding the productivity and wage effects of age the econometric results confirm a positive correlation between firm productivity and the share of middle-aged employees (41-50 years old) within the manufacturing sector. Hence, the results provide evidence of an inverted u-shaped age-productivity profile in this sector also found for other countries. Furthermore, age-wage and age-productivity profiles seem to follow unequal patterns. Compared to the group of the 15-30 and the 51 and above years old workers the group of middle-aged employees earn less than a productivity based wage scheme would require. In terms of age effects on innovativeness the micro-econometric analysis again reveals an inverted u-shaped profile. Workers aged around 40 years seem to act as key driver for innovation activities within firms. An additional finding concerns the impact of age diversity on innovation. The expected positive effect of a heterogeneous age structure is not confirmed by the data. With respect to labour market mobility results are in favour of a negative correlation between age and job mobility either in terms of changing professions or firms. The estimation of a multi equation model verifies that expected wages of older workers do not or only marginally increase due to job mobility, so, financial incentives to change jobs are very low. Yet, even after controlling the absent wage incentive older employees still remain more immobile than younger workers. Altogether, these results should not only be of academic interest but also informative for actors on the firm and the governmental level. Both sides are asked to cope with the challenges of demographic change. Only by maintaining productivity and innovativeness until old ages the necessary resources can be generated to preserve an economy’s prosperity even if the share of non-active population is increasing by demographic developments. Secondly, enhancing productivity is essential to ensure employability of older persons and to sustain the size of workforce even in the circumstances of an ageing economy.
