Achieving Scientific Quality and Meeting Social Standards

In order to secure the highest standards, the courses and the research projects will be evaluated. Evaluations form the basis for further improvements in education and training.

To this end, doctoral students are given opportunity to assess courses, while research projects will be evaluated on the occasion of the regular audit by the IWH Scientific Advisory Board.

Doctoral Programme Advisory Board

The IWH-DPE activities are coordinated by an IWH economist. A Doctoral Programme Advisory Board discusses and approves proposals for doctoral research projects and monitors the progress made in those projects. The board consists of the Doctoral Programme director, the speaker of doctoral students, the scientific members of the IWH Executive Board and an external university professor. The Programme Manager attends the Board's sessions as a permanent guest. An IWH senior economist serves as mediator in the case of a dissension.

Mentoring Agreement

Doctoral students and their supervisors will conclude a mentoring agreement stipulating their respective rights and duties. Among others, the agreement includes the topic of the doctoral thesis, the frequency of mentoring and advisory meetings, and at later stages the exposé, the work plan, and their revisions. It will also refer to the ethical guidelines for scientific research in accordance with DFG. In a case of conflict, the IWH Mediator (Ombudsperson) can be involved.

International Graduate Academy

In cooperation with the International Graduate Academy (InGrA) of Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, doctoral students get trained in time management, scientific writing, presentations, and discussions, as well as career management. As a certificated university ensuring compatibility of family and job, InGrA will offer support for doctoral students with children. Together with InGrA's international Ph.D. network, strong efforts will be put in socially integrating especially international doctoral students.
