Gerhard Heimpold joined the institute in 1992. He is a member of the Department of Structural Change and Productivity since 2008 and became deputy head in 2014. His research focuses on regional development policy, case studies on regions in East Germany, and the analyses on structural characteristics of regions.

Gerhard Heimpold earned a diploma and doctoral degree from Higher School of Economics in Berlin.
