Organisation of Research
The research structure at the Institute is designed to foster close interplay between micro- and macroeconomic research, as well as between financial economics and labour economics.
IWH research is organised in a matrix structure. This organizational structure allows for flexibility in research and the incorporation of new research questions without having to initiate structural change processes with every new development.
Research Departments and Research Centres
The primary dimension of the matrix consists of research departments and research centres that have been established on a medium to long-term basis and which are responsible for human resources development, infrastructure development and quality management. Currently, there are the following departments and centres:
- Centre for Business and Productivity Dynamics (IWH-CBPD)
- Centre for Evidence-based Policy Advice (IWH-CEP)
- Department Financial Markets
- Department Labour Markets
- Departments Laws, Regulations and Factor Markets
- Department Macroeconomics
- Research Data Centre (IWH-RDC)
Research Groups
The secondary dimension of the matrix consists of research groups organized as fixed-term projects. They are responsible for working on specific research projects and are led largely autonomously by junior researchers. The concepts for these research groups are developed by the institute’s researchers. They are aligned with the overall research questions defined in the IWH research agenda.
Research Clusters
Topic-oriented research clusters, which are located where the two dimensions interface, do not form their own organizational units. The establishment of research groups follows a structured, competitive procedure. The research clusters and research groups comprise researchers from different departments, thus allowing for a cross-departmental integration of research at the IWH.
