What’s the Melting Pot Worth? Multiculturalism and House Prices

Abstract
Is there a multicultural neighborhood price premium? We exploit plausibly exogenous variation in British colonization patterns in Northern Ireland during the early 1600s which created neighborhoods of varying religious composition that persists until today. These religious groups are culturally distinct, but are observationally equivalent ethnically and socioeconomically. A standard deviation increase neighborhood-level multiculturalism raises house prices by 9.6%. Multiculturalism raises property prices by increasing asset liquidity and housing demand as a wider spectrum of society demand houses in these areas. The findings and mechanism contrast sharply with prior evidence showing negative relationships due to homophily, social networks, and identification challenges.

Political Polarization and Finance

Abstract
We review an empirical literature that studies how political polarization affects financial decisions. We first discuss the degree of partisan segregation in finance and corporate America, the mechanisms through which partisanship may influence financial decisions, and the available data sources used to infer individuals’ partisan leanings. We then describe and discuss the empirical evidence. Our review suggests an economically large and often growing partisan gap in the financial decisions of households, corporate executives, and financial intermediaries. Partisan alignment between individuals explains team and financial relationship formation, with initial evidence suggesting that high levels of partisan homogeneity may be associated with economic costs. We conclude by proposing several promising directions for future research.

Regionale Verteilung von Flüchtlingen in Deutschland
Angesichts hoher Flüchtlingszahlen und der nicht funktionsfähigen gemeinsamen europäischen Asylpolitik muss die regionale Verteilung der Flüchtlinge in Deutschland nach Einschätzung des IWH neu überdacht werden. Soziale Netzwerke und die regionale Arbeitsmarktlage sind dabei wichtige Indikatoren. Eine optimale Verteilung ist mit bürokratischen Mitteln allerdings kaum zu erreichen. Letztlich müssen Marktkräfte einen interregionalen Ausgleich unterstützen. Dafür bedarf es aber entsprechender Anreize sowohl für die Flüchtlinge als auch für die politischen Entscheidungsträger vor Ort – eine Herausforderung für Regionalpolitik und Finanzausgleich.

Abstract
The paper discusses the role of the concept of special and differential treatment in the framework of regional trade agreements for the development of a competition regime. After a discussion of the main characteristics and possible shortfalls of those concepts, three case countries are assessed in terms of their experience with progressivity, flexibility, and technical and financial assistance: Poland was led to align its competition laws to match the model of the EU. The Ukraine opted voluntarily for the European model, this despite its intense integration mainly with Russia. South Africa, a developing country that emerged from a highly segregated social fabric and an economy dominated by large conglomerates with concentrated ownership. All three countries enacted (or comprehensively reformed) their competition laws in an attempt to face the challenges of economic integration and catch up development on the one hand and particular social problems on the other. Hence, their experience may be pivotal for a variety of different developing countries who are in negotiations to include competition issues in regional trade agreements. The results suggest that the design of such competition issues have to reflect country-particularities to achieve an efficient competition regime.

Bei weiter zunehmender Abwanderung ins Umland sind vermehrt Verkehrsprobleme, zunehmende soziale Segregation in den Großsiedlungen sowie politische Konflikte zwischen Kernstadt und Umlandgemeinden zu erwarten.
