Non-take-up Behavior of Social Assistance in Germany - An Empirical Investigation of Unexpected Reactions
Joachim Wilde, Alexander Kubis
Jahrbücher für Nationalökonomie und Statistik,
No. 3,
2005
Abstract
Concerning German social assistance earlier studies calculate a non-take-up rate of more than 50 percent. This contradicts intuition. Using data from the low-income panel we estimate eligibility and non-take-up rate more precisely. However, avoiding simulation errors of earlier studies reduces the rate only slightly. Therefore, we estimate a multiple probit model to explain the nontake- up behavior. Significant reasons are low claims, stigma and the expectation of a short life of eligibility. Additionally, we show a significant simultaneous relation between earned income and the tendency to participate in social assistance. The sign is negative in both directions.

FDI as Multiplier of Modern Technology in Hungarian Industry
Jutta Günther
Intereconomics,
No. 5,
2002
Abstract
Foreign direct investment is generally expected to play a significant role as a multiplier of modern production and management know-how in Central Eastern European transition economies. The following paper examines the various mechanisms by which such technological spillover effects could in theory take place and compares them with the results of an empirical study of their practical significance for Hungarian industry.

Factors accounting for the enactment of a competition law – an empirical analysis
Franz Kronthaler, Johannes Stephan
One-off Publications,
No. 6,
2005
Abstract
The paper is concerned with the factors that account for decisions to enact a national competition law. In a first step, the paper updates and enlarges the existing data bases of countries that have enacted a competition law. The paper then identifies and discusses possible factors that influence the decision to enact a competition law. In a third step, the method of panel-data logit analysis is employed to test a set of hypothesis pertaining to the factors across the time dimension and across countries. The results of this analysis are interpreted in terms of significance and in terms of the sign of their influence on the probability of a country to enact. Given generality of the analysis, the results can shed light on the probability of individual countries, and in particular developing countries, to actually take the step of enactment.

Factors Accounting for the Enactment of a Competition Law - an Empirical Analysis

2007
Abstract
This work is concerned with the factors accounting for decisions to enact a national competition law. We first update and enlarge existing data bases of countries that have enacted a competition law. We then identify and discuss the factors that may influence the decision to enact a competition law. Panel-data logit analysis is then used to test a set of hypotheses relating to the factors involved across time and across countries. The results are interpreted in terms of significance and the sign of their influence on the probability that a country enacts. The results shed light on the probability of individual countries, particularly developing countries, taking the step of enactment.
