The Effects of Sovereign Risk: A High Frequency Identification Based on News Ticker Data

Abstract
This paper uses novel news ticker data to evaluate the effect of sovereign risk on economic and financial outcomes. The use of intraday news enables me to derive policy events and respective timestamps that potentially alter investors’ beliefs about a sovereign’s willingness to service its debt and thereby sovereign risk. Following the high frequency identification literature, in the tradition of Kuttner (2001) and Guerkaynak et al. (2005), associated variation in sovereign risk is then obtained by capturing bond price movements within narrowly defined time windows around the event time. I conduct the outlined identification for Italy since its large bond market and its frequent coverage in the news render it a suitable candidate country. Using the identified shocks in an instrumental variable local projection setting yields a strong instrument and robust results in line with theoretical predictions. I document a dampening effect of sovereign risk on output. Also, borrowing costs for the private sector increase and inflation rises in response to higher sovereign risk.

Unethical Employee Behavior Against Coworkers Following Unkind Management Treatment: An Experimental Analysis

Abstract
We study unethical behavior toward unrelated coworkers as a response to managerial unkindness with two experiments. In our lab experiment, we do not find that subjects who experienced unkindness are more likely to cheat in a subsequent competition against another coworker who simultaneously experienced mistreatment. A subsequent survey experiment suggests that behavior in the lab can be explained by individuals' preferences for norm adherence, because unkind management behavior does not alter the perceived moral appropriateness of cheating. However, having no shared experience of managerial unkindness opens up some moral wiggle room for employees to misbehave at the costs of others.

A Note of Caution on Quantifying Banks' Recapitalization Effects

Abstract
Unconventional monetary policy measures like asset purchase programs aim to reduce certain securities' yield and alter financial institutions' investment behavior. These measures increase the institutions' market value of securities and add to their equity positions. We show that the extent of this recapitalization effect crucially depends on the securities' accounting and valuation methods, country-level regulation, and maturity structure. We argue that future research needs to consider these factors when quantifying banks' recapitalization effects and consequent changes in banks' lending decisions to the real sector.

Measuring the Indirect Effects of Adverse Employer Behaviour on Worker Productivity – A Field Experiment

Abstract
We conduct a field experiment to study how worker productivity is affected if employers act adversely towards their co-workers. Our employees work for two shifts in a call centre. In our main treatment, we lay off some workers before the second shift. Compared to two control treatments, we find that the lay-off reduces the productivity of unaffected workers by 12%. We find suggestive evidence that this result is not driven by altered beliefs about the job or the management’s competence, but caused by the workers’ perception of unfair employer behaviour. The latter interpretation is confirmed in a prediction experiment with professional HR managers. Our results suggest that the price for adverse employer behaviour goes well beyond the potential tit for tat of directly affected workers.

Epidemics in the Neoclassical and New Keynesian Models

Abstract
We analyze the effects of an epidemic in three standard macroeconomic models. We find that the neoclassical model does not rationalize the positive comovement of consumption and investment observed in recessions associated with an epidemic. Introducing monopolistic competition into the neoclassical model remedies this shortcoming even when prices are completely flexible. Finally, sticky prices lead to a larger recession but do not fundamentally alter the predictions of the monopolistic competition model.

Abstract
Ostdeutschland schrumpft, Westdeutschland wächst. Dieser Eindruck drängt sich aus demographischer Sicht auf, wenn die Bevölkerungsentwicklung seit 1989 betrachtet wird. Lebten auf dem Gebiet der fünf östlichen Bundesländer Ende 1988 noch 15,4 Millionen Personen, so waren es Ende 2018 nur 12,6 Millionen Personen – ein Rückgang um fast drei Millionen Einwohner oder beinahe 20%. Die zehn westlichen Bundesländer wuchsen im selben Zeitraum von 59,6 Millionen auf 66,8 Millionen Einwohner. Der überwiegende Teil dieser unterschiedlichen demographischen Entwicklung ist der räumlichen Umverteilung von Bevölkerung geschuldet, einerseits der Nettobinnenwanderung von Ost- nach Westdeutschland, andererseits der sehr unterschiedlichen Verteilung der Nettoaußenwanderungen. Die Umverteilung der Bevölkerung ist dabei nicht homogen, vielmehr in starkem Maße selektiv – vor allem in den Dimensionen von Ausbildung, Alter, Geschlecht und Nationalität.

Stress Tests and Small Business Lending

Abstract
Post-crisis stress tests have altered banks’ credit supply to small business. Banks most affected by stress tests reallocate credit away from riskier markets and toward safer ones. They also raise interest rates on small loans. Quantities fall most in high-risk markets where stress-tested banks own no branches, and prices rise mainly where they do. The results suggest that banks price the stress-test induced increase in capital requirements where they have local knowledge, and exit where they do not. Stress tests do not, however, reduce aggregate credit. Small banks seem to increase their share in geographies formerly reliant on stress-tested lenders.

Wir analysieren darin die Entwicklungsunterschiede im heutigen Deutschland. Ob Wirtschaftsleistung oder Löhne, Zuwanderung oder Bildung: In vielerlei Hinsicht zeichnen die regionalen Muster beständig die einstige Teilung zwischen DDR und alter Bundesrepublik nach. Abstract
We present a field experiment in which we set up a call-center to study how the productivity of workers is affected if managers treat their co-workers in an unfair way. This question cannot be studied in long-lived organizations since workers may change their career expectations (and hence effort) when managers behave unfairly towards co-workers. In order to rule out such confounds and to measure productivity changes of unaffected workers in a clean way, we create an environment where employees work for two shifts. In one treatment, we lay off parts of the workforce before the second shift. Compared to two different control treatments, we find that, in the layoff treatment, the productivity of the remaining, unaffected workers drops by 12 percent. We show that this result is not driven by peer effects or altered beliefs about the job or the managers’ competence, but rather related to the workers’ perception of unfair behavior of employers towards co-workers. The latter interpretation is confirmed in a survey among professional HR managers. We also show that the effect of unfair behavior on the productivity of unaffected workers is close to the upper bound of the direct effects of wage cuts on the productivity of affected workers. This suggests that the price of an employer’s unfair behavior goes well beyond the potential tit-for-tat of directly affected workers.

Hans-Ulrich Brautzsch vom Leibniz-Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung Halle (IWH) zeigt aber jetzt: Wenn Pendlerströme und Arbeitszeiten eingerechnet werden, liegen Osten und Westen bei der Arbeitsleistung gleichauf – und das Gefälle entsteht erstaunlicherweise zwischen Nord- und Süddeutschland.
