Panel Seasonal Unit Root Test With An Application for Unemployment Data
Christian Dreger, Hans-Eggert Reimers
IWH Discussion Papers,
No. 191,
2004
Abstract
In this paper the seasonal unit root test of Hylleberg et al. (1990) is generalized to cover a heterogenous panel. The procedure follows the work of Im, Pesaran and Shin (2002). Test statistics are proposed and critical values are obtained by simulations. Moreover, the properties of the tests are analyzed for di®erent deterministic and dynamic specications. Evidence is presented that for a small time dimension the power is slow even for increasing cross section dimension. Therefore, it seems necessary to have a higher time dimension than cross section dimension. The new test is applied for unemployment behaviour in
industrialized countries. In some cases seasonal unit roots are detected. However, the null hypotheses of panel seasonal unit roots are rejected. The null hypothesis of a unit root at the zero frequency is not rejected, thereby supporting the presence of hysteresis effects.

Exporting Financial Institutions Management via Foreign Direct Investment Mergers and Acquisitions
Allen N. Berger, Claudia M. Buch, G. DeLong
Journal of International Money and Finance,
No. 3,
2004
Abstract
We test the relevance of the new trade theory and the traditional theory of comparative advantage for explaining the geographic patterns of international M&As of financial institutions between 1985 and 2000. The data provide statistically significant support for both theories. We also find evidence that the U.S. has idiosyncratic comparative advantages at both exporting and importing financial institutions management.

A model of private households´ consumption expenditure on the basis of representative income and consumption statistics
Harald Lehmann
Schriften des IWH,
No. 16,
2004
Abstract
The accurate measurement of the level and composition of private consumption is one of the crucial tasks of official statistics. There are different ways of measurement that have to be compared and assessed. In the following, a comparison between a supplier side based and a consumers side based measurement (household budget surveys) shows, that the the later one still has some drawbacks. Additionally the household budget surveys are used for microeconometric consumption analysis. Recommendations, potentials and drawbacks will be worked out.

The development of R&D intensive industries in East Germany makes progress
Siegfried Beer
Wirtschaft im Wandel,
No. 2,
2004
Abstract
For East Germany – also called the New German Länder – it is very important to enlarge human capital intensive production. Starting from this consideration, the empirical study investigates the development of research & development (R&D) intensive industries for the years 1998 to 2002 whereby the different technology classes are also taken into account. The study is based on official statistics for producer goods. The analysis shows that the production of goods from R&D intensive industries increased stronger than the total production in East Germany’s manufacturing industry (8.5% versus 5.9%). Especially the increased production of high-technology goods contributed to this development. Most important branches thereby are electronic industry and aerospace industry. Medium-tech industries were less important for the above described trend. Overall, the development indicates an improvement of the technological capability of East Germany’s manufacturing industry. Compared to West Germany, however, the production of goods from medium-tech industries is underrepresented. Further more, it is only one group of products in East Germany’s industry that plays a dominant role within Germany as a whole. This is electronic devices.

Municipal companies in Germany: turnover, employment, fields of operation
Peter Haug
Wirtschaft im Wandel,
No. 13,
2003
Abstract
Despite the ongoing political and scientific discussion about justification and extent of municipal economic activities, neither official statistics nor surveys of associations or research institutes provide valid data concerning the importance of local public enterprises. The IWH has carried out an analysis of different statistical sources which tries to fill the gap for municipal enterprises and yields the following results: Turnover- and employment shares of (big) companies with municipal shareholding are rather small in Germany. Nevertheless, such enterprises dominate within certain branches (e.g. public utilities) and their importance for the regional economy is particularly in Eastern Germany above-average.

Current economic situation: A silver lining on the horizon
Wirtschaft im Wandel,
No. 12,
2003
Abstract
The Federal Statistical Office has recently released the figures for second quarter GDP and its components. At the same time, the data for the past four years has been revised. This made it necessary to update the existing IWH-forecasts for 2003 and 2004. Stimulated by an improving world economy GDP will not decline this year but merely stagnate. In 2004 the external stimulus will further increase and accounting for the additional working days economic activity will rise by 1.8%. The turnaround at the labour market will not take place before the second half of 2004. Fiscal policy is currently aiming to balance the budget, but so far the government tried to achieve this goal by increasing levies and taxes. In order to maintain the growth potential, a sustainable consolidation, though, should work by means of cutting expenditure. Overall the deficit will be 4.1% and 3.9% of nominal GDP in this and next year, respectively.

Enterprise-related services in East-Germany – an investigation of the service sector statistics
Siegfried Beer
Wirtschaft im Wandel,
No. 12,
2003
Abstract
According to the national accounts in East Germany, the enterprise-related services have developed substantielly since 1990. This is expressed by the average annual increase of real gross value added of 9.5% (GDP: 4.9%) until 2000. According to the newly introduced service sector statistics (for 2000), firms in the East German enterprise related services have on average 9 employes, and thus, they are only slightly smaller than enterprises in West-Germany. Much bigger differences appear with respect to the average sales and productivity (60% or 45%). Various explanations exist. One major reason obviously is, that enterprises in East-Germany make smaller sales because of the clearly smaller size of enterprises which demand these services. Furthermore the smaller earning power of services demanding enterprises, differences in the branch structur of enterprise related services, and administrative regulations for prices play a role.

Tracing technological change over long periods in Germany in chemicals using patent statistics.
Iciar Dominguez Lacasa, Hariolf Grupp, U. Schmoch
Scientometrics,
No. 2,
2003
Abstract
This contribution deepens the feasibility issues of building state-of-the-art patent indicators with historical patent documents available in electronic form from the German Patent Office since the introduction of the Patent Law for the German Empire in 1877. The paper is divided into two parts: a methodological discussion and a case study on the chemical sector in Germany. The development of the technology sector defined matches remarkably well with stylised facts that institutional analysis in the chemical sector have provided us with so far. Moreover, the possibility of varying the level of aggregation in the analysis of technological areas discloses empirical evidence for the path-dependent development in the chemical sector after the advent of the organic chemistry and its application in the chemical synthesis of dye stuffs. Our findings enhance institutional and historical contributions about technological change in the chemical sector and suggest new research questions for innovation studies.

The macroeconomic development of East Germany in view of the official statistics' new accounting system; initial interpretations and questions
Udo Ludwig
Wirtschaft im Wandel,
No. 11,
2000
