Abstract
Individuals’ preferences in transition regions are still shaped by the former communist system. We test this ‘communist legacy’ hypothesis by examining the impact of acculturation in a communist regime on social network participation and, as a consequence, on preferences for spatial mobility. We focus on the paradigmatic case of Eastern Germany, where mobility intentions seem to be substantially weaker than in the Western part. Applying an IV ordered probit approach we first find that Eastern people acculturated in a communist system are more invested in locally bounded informal social capital than Western people. Second, we confirm that membership in such locally bounded social networks reduces the intention to move away. Third, after controlling for the social network effect the mobility gap between East and West is substantially reduced. Low spatial mobility of the Eastern population, we conclude, is to an important extent attributable to a social capital endowment characteristic of post-communist economies

Why are East Germans not More Mobile? Analyzing the Impact of Social Ties on Regional Migration

Going Public to Acquire? The Acquisition Motive in IPOs

Abstract
Newly public firms make acquisitions at a torrid pace. Their large acquisition appetites reflect the concentration of initial public offerings (IPOs) in mergers and acquisitions-(M&A-) intensive industries, but acquisitions by IPO firms also outpace those by mature firms in the same industry. IPO firms' acquisition activity is fueled by the initial capital infusion at the IPO and through the creation of an acquisition currency used to raise capital for both cash- and stock-financed acquisitions along with debt issuance subsequent to the IPO. IPO firms play a bigger role in the M&A process by participating as acquirers than they do as takeover targets, and acquisitions are as important to their growth as research and development (R&D) and capital expenditures (CAPEX). The pattern of acquisitions following an IPO shapes the evolution of ownership structure of newly public firms.

Abstract
This paper empirically analyses the question why East Germans facing weak regional labour markets show rather limited spatial mobility. Using data from the German Socio-Economic Panel, our estimation of a simultaneous three equation ordered probit model shows that informal social capital reduces regional mobility while formal social capital supports it. Furthermore, we find that East Germans acculturated in a communist system are more invested in locally bounded informal social capital than in the mobility supporting formal social capital. Low spatial mobility of East Germans, we conclude, is to an important part attributable to a system specific social capital mix.

Abstract
The paper shows that mispriced deposit insurance and capital regulation were of second-order importance in determining the capital structure of large U.S. and European banks during 1991 to 2004. Instead, standard cross-sectional determinants of non-financial firms’ leverage carry over to banks, except for banks whose capital ratio is close to the regulatory minimum. Consistent with a reduced role of deposit insurance, we document a shift in banks’ liability structure away from deposits towards non-deposit liabilities. We find that unobserved time-invariant bank fixed-effects are ultimately the most important determinant of banks’ capital structures and that banks’ leverage converges to bank specific, time-invariant targets.

Change in East German Firm Level Export Determinants

Abstract
Exports have a ‘motor of growth’ status for the German economy. They both save and increase employment and provide wealth. However, only a minority of East German manufacturing and construction firms realize sales in foreign countries. The paper analyses for two points in time the influences of firm level export factors on the level of export activities of East German firms, and how the strength of the influence has changed over time. We found export sales especially in firms who are integrated in international corporate groups and are highly specialized. Economies of scale (firm size) increase the export share. Additionally, export sales also depend on wages. These findings are in line with current analysis in the field of international trade. While the above factors are found to be stable over time some others have changed in importance. In 2000 the industrial sector and the unit labor costs were important factors in determining export activities. In 2008 these factors have lost importance. Instead, human capital and investments have achieved significance.

Cross-border Diversification in Bank Asset Portfolios

Abstract
We compute optimally diversified international asset portfolios for banks located in France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States using the mean–variance portfolio model with currency hedging. We compare these benchmark portfolios with the actual cross-border asset positions of banks from 1995 to 2003 and ask whether the differences are best explained by regulations, institutions, cultural conditions or other financial frictions. Our results suggest that both culture and regulations affect the probability of a country's being overweighted in banks' portfolios: countries whose residents score higher on a survey measure of trust are more likely to be overweighted, while countries that have tighter capital controls are less likely to be overweighted. From a policy standpoint, the importance of culture suggests a limit to the degree of financial integration that may be achievable by the removal of formal economic barriers.

A Panel Data Analysis on China's Intra-Industry Trade in the Capital Goods Sector

Abstract
This paper adopts the Hausman-Taylor 2SLS error components approach in estimating the determinants of China's Intra-Industry Trade (IIT) in the capital goods sector with its 26 partner countries. It disaggregates IIT into horizontal IIT (HIIT) and vertical IIT (VIIT). Capital goods final products and intermediates are separately estimated in order to reveal the differentiated trade patterns. It finds that economic similarity is very significantly negatively correlated with the intermediates IIT, but to a less extent correlated with the final products IIT. Factor endowment is of no significance in determining IIT in the intermediates, although it is significantly positively correlated with the final products IIT. Economic size is significantly negatively correlated with both final products and intermediates IIT. Distance is not yet dead in impacting the level of final products IIT, but of less importance in influencing the intermediates IIT. China is exchanging intermediates in a less intraindustry manner with ASEAN nations. However, because VIIT is dominating TIIT, no significant differences exist between the estimation results of TIIT and VIIT.

Germany’s Production of Export Goods: Human Capital Content Slightly Exceeds that of Imports

Abstract
In the decade before the present, world financial crisis exports out of Germany expanded enormously. This was caused by the growing world demand as well as the internationalization of the national production processes and favoured by the improving price competitiveness. At the same time, against the background of the tertiarisation of the economy, the qualification of employees has increased considerably. In our study, we investigate the changes of labour quality in the production of export goods using the standard open input-output model. Hereby, labour input is measured in terms of different formal qualification levels of the employees. The results are compared with the labour input for imported goods. We find out that the input of high qualified labour per unit of produced export goods exceeds only marginally the comparable input value of the imports. It should be mentioned that the comparison is strongly influenced by the assumption of identical production functions for both Germany and its trading partners.
