The Economics of Firm Productivity

Abstract
Productivity varies widely between industries and countries, but even more so across individual firms within the same sectors. The challenge for governments is to strike the right balance between policies designed to increase overall productivity and policies designed to promote the reallocation of resources towards firms that could use them more effectively. The aim of this book is to provide the empirical evidence necessary in order to strike this policy balance. The authors do so by using a micro-aggregated dataset for 20 EU economies produced by CompNet, the Competitiveness Research Network, established some 10 years ago among major European institutions and a number of EU productivity boards, National Central Banks, National Statistical institutes, as well as academic Institutions. They call for pan-EU initiatives involving statistical offices and scholars to achieve a truly complete EU market for firm-level information on which to build solidly founded economic policies.

Studie: Wie Finanzkrisen Menschen unzufriedener machen und wie sich das verhindern lässt
Finanzkrisen haben nicht nur starke Verwerfungen im ökonomischen System zur Folge: Sie beeinflussen auch direkt die Lebenszufriedenheit der Menschen. Am stärksten betroffen sind die Schwachen der Gesellschaft, auch wenn diese unter Umständen gar nicht selbst mit Aktien spekulieren. Das ist das Ergebnis einer neuen Studie der Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) und des Leibniz-Instituts für Wirtschaftsforschung Halle (IWH). Diese negativen Folgen könnten die Kauflust der Menschen schmälern und die Wirkung der Krise sogar noch verstärken. Die Studie wurde kürzlich in der Fachzeitschrift „The B.E. Journal of Economic Analysis & Policy“ veröffentlicht.

Effectiveness and (In)Efficiencies of Compensation Regulation: Evidence from the EU Banker Bonus Cap

Abstract
We investigate the (unintended) effects of bank executive compensation regulation. Capping the share of variable compensation spurred average turnover rates driven by CEOs at poorly performing banks. Other than that, banks‘ responses to raise fixed compensation sufficed to retain the vast majority of non-CEO executives and those at well performing banks. We fail to find evidence that banks with executives that are more affected by the bonus cap became less risky. In fact, numerous results indicate an increase of risk, even in its systemic dimension according to selected measures. The return component of bank performance appears to be unaffected by the bonus cap. Risk hikes are consistent with an insurance effect associated with raised the increase in fixed compensation of executives. The ability of the policy to enhance financial stability is therefore doubtful.
